Bio of Rev. George Skinner

Rev. George E Skinner

Biography

A native of Hampton, SC, George Skinner surrendered his life to Jesus as Lord and Savior at age twelve. He grew in his walk with God and continued to serve Him during and after graduating with a BS in Biology from The Citadel in 1993.  George received his Army commission and married Heather Bartlett at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC, in 1994. He worked as a SC Department of Labor OSHA inspector while serving in the Army National Guard. The newlyweds grew in their faith through active participation in the church body; together at Hampton First Baptist, Hampton, SC, they led couples Sunday School, adult Bible studies, and children’s and youth ministry. With three young children, George was ordained as a deacon at age 30, largely because the church recognized a calling on his life for ministry.

As George and his family became more active in multiple church and community ministries, he surrendered to full-time ministry. At that point, he was working as an engineer with International Paper Company/Nevamar in Hampton, SC. In the spring of 2003, George went before the church and shared that he felt led to enroll in seminary. Within three months, the family sold their house and moved to Wake Forest, NC, where, just three years later, George would receive his Master of Divinity in Biblical Counseling. The family welcomed their fourth child during their time at seminary.

During his final year of seminary and in the year following, George served at Gorman Baptist Church in Durham, NC (2006-2008). He provided Biblical counseling as church staff and taught math and Bible to middle school students at Gorman Christian Academy.

In 2008, George received a call to serve as associate pastor of youth and children at Saluda River Baptist Church in West Columbia, SC. While ministering there, the Skinners led youth on North American missions through the PowerPlant church-planting program. The family also grew again as they welcomed their fifth child. Then, feeling the Lord’s call to preach, George went on to lead as pastor at Sand Hill Baptist Church in Varnville, SC, from 2010 to 2024.

Port Royal Baptist Church called Pastor George to his current position in December 2024, and he began preaching there in January 2025. The Skinner family, including Heather and their youngest daughter Julianna (JJ), feel blessed to serve here in the Beaufort community and to call PRBC home. In his free time, George enjoys hunting, fishing, woodworking, and going on adventures with his family. His wife teaches high school at Lowcountry Montessori School, where JJ attends as well. Their daughter Jaclyn is a full-time student at USC Beaufort, studying elementary education, and she works as a manager at Chick-Fil-A. Their daughter Jordie is a third grade teacher at Southside Christian Academy in Greenville, SC. Also in the Upstate of SC are their son Jake, a ReWa water treatment facility operator, and his wife Ramey, studying to become a physician’s assistant. Son George, employed in the family’s financial planning firm, and his wife Alli, along with their two daughters, live in Lexington, SC.
